Wireless
Communication Project
. . . Since 2001, the ITS Wireless Committee has been
supporting
wireless
connectivity in
all campus buildings. Wireless technology provides
network connectivity throughout French Hall, Murchie
Science Building, University Center, University Pavilion,
University Theatre, the Thompson Library, the Hubbard
Building, and the William
S. White Building. This will allow personal
computers equipped with wireless cards to be used
throughout each building (see
floor
plans). Students and faculty should
find the added bonus of some outside coverage north of the
Library by the river and south of UCEN in the plaza.
All portable computer
equipment
has been equipped with wireless network cards, which have
been tested for compatibility. For information about
installing wireless cards on personal and university-owned
computers, please consult the Wireless
Network Support Center.
Upgrading the
Wireless Network
During the Winter 2005 semester, the ITS Wireless
Committee, lead by Erik Taipalus, began investigating an
upgrade to the existing wireless infrastructure. UCEN
and the Library were targeted for the upgrade, a consulting
company was chosen, and work began in Spring 2006. On
Monday, January 15, 2007, the new wireless networks in UCEN
and the Library will go live! For full details, please

AT&T Wi-Fi Hotspot (formerly SBC FreedomLink Hot
Spot)
During Summer
2005, the ITS wireless team facilitated a
partnership between the University and AT&T (formerly SBC)
which brings a public hotspot for wireless access to visitors at the University Pavilion.
ITS worked to facilitate the installation of the Wi-Fi access,
joining other local hotspots located at Barnes & Noble, the Holiday Inn Gateway Center, and several McDonalds restaurants (View
Location Finder). The wireless access
will be available to subcribers of AT&T DSL and Dialup service as
well as to the general public, who can purchase access on
the spot.
The next
time you are in the Pavilion with your laptop, look for the
attwifi connection. When you connect to the
attwifi network and try to access the Internet, you will
first view the AT&T Wi-Fi splash screen that displays
options for gaining access. On the right of the screen
is the UM-Flint logo which is linked to supply free access
to the UM-Flint web site.
