Department Fee-Based Services
ITS offers many fee-based services to university departments such as adding additional space to your Home Drive, Departmental Drive, and Email, server hosting, data storage and backup services, and web hosting services. Forms
All printed forms are now available via the Web as Adobe
Acrobat files (.pdf). This is the only technology which
ensures the format and security of a document across all
platforms.

How to access computing services:
Students, faculty and staff are eligible for a variety of
computing services at the University of
Michigan-Flint. In order to use U of M computing
services, you must have a uniqname (your personal
identifier).

Alumni Alumni can obtain access to computing
services for a fee. For more information and to
apply, please consult the
Student/Alumni Support Center.

Banner The Banner administrative database
houses all UM-Flint student-related data. The Banner
database and reports can be accessed only from a Windows
PC that is connected to the campus network; however,
UM-Flint’s online Student
Information Services (SIS) system provides faculty
and students with an easy-to-use Web interface for
accessing Banner data. A Banner ID is not needed for use
of SIS. The Banner Web site,
http://ww2.umflint.edu/its/projects/banner.html,
contains links to online Banner resources, including the
Banner ID request form, User Manual, Quicknotes, and
training.

Blog Pilot
Faculty and staff may create a personal, faculty, or
departmental blog at

Computer Consultants Computer consultants are available in
the student computer labs to answer
basic computer questions. For more in-depth assistance,
consultants are available at the

Dialup Services Dialup
Services allow faculty, students, and staff access to
email, progdata and the Internet from home. Links
to Quicknotes on setting up dialup access and local
numbers are available online at

through the ITS HelpDesk. The local Flint dialup number
is: (810) 249-0300.

Email - Faculty & Staff Microsoft Outlook is the supported
email program for use by UM-Flint faculty and staff. An
Outlook account is automatically created with the setup
of a LAN account. In addition to email, Outlook provides
electronic calendar, contacts, and task functions.
Faculty and staff who prefer to use a personal or other
business email account can forward their Outlook email
to the preferred email address. An Outlook account is
required in order for one to be listed in the
faculty/staff email address book and to access the
public discussion groups. Detailed Outlook support

Email - List Serves ITS
maintains a number of public email lists, also called
list serves, for faculty and staff use. Usage guidelines
and instructions for subscribing/unsubscribing to each
list are online at

In addition to public email lists, faculty and staff may
request the creation of a private email list. These
lists may be used by faculty to communicate with
students in each of their courses or with colleagues
serving on committees and other collaborative projects.

Faculty/Staff Workstations Faculty and staff without desktop
access to the network may use the equipment in any
open computing lab. ITS also maintains a
faculty/staff workstation, scanner, and color printer in
the Faculty Technology Center, Room 3107 of the William
S. White Building. In addition, there are two
faculty/staff workstations and a networked laser printer
in room 134 of the Francis Willson Thompson Library and
an open faculty/staff workstation in the Peerless Staff
Lounge located in room 323 of the University Center.

Hardware & Software Sales Faculty, staff, and students are eligible to purchase
hardware and limited non-Microsoft software for home use
at discounted prices through the U-M Computer Showcase.

Please contact the ITS HelpDesk for consultation on
which products best suit your needs. UM-Flint faculty,
staff and students may purchase Microsoft software by
visiting the UM-Flint ITS Department (207 Murchie
Science Building). U of M-Flint faculty and staff cannot
purchase Microsoft products through Ann Arbor.

Instructional computer labs ITS supports seven instructional
computing labs on campus for faculty use. Instructional
labs are equipped with desktop workstations, an
instructor workstation and VCR connected to a projection
system, and a networked laser printer. Lab descriptions

These labs must be reserved in advance through the
Office of the Registrar, 810-762-3345.

ITS HelpDesk
Consultants are available at the ITS HelpDesk to answer
questions about using UM-Flint computing resources or to
place a work ticket for repair of campus computer
equipment. HelpDesk consultants can be reached by phone
at 810-766-6804, by email sent to itshelpdesk@umflint.edu,
or in person in room 207A of the Murchie Science
Building. The HelpDesk also provides numerous resources
on its Web site at http://www.umflint.edu/helpdesk.

LAN Servers
A LAN account is required for use of
any networked computer on campus. The LAN provides
student, faculty, and staff with access to email, Microsoft
Office programs and other networked software, Internet
applications, Progdata, departmental directories, and
personal file storage and web site space. Many LAN services may be
accessed from home as well. Faculty and staff may obtain a LAN account
by
completing the online Access Request Form

Laser Printers
Laser Printers are available in the student labs for
use in support of academic work. Please consult

Mcard
ITS supports the distribution of the Mcard
identification card to students, faculty, and staff.

Mediated Classrooms
Several Mediated
classrooms still exist in French Hall and Murchie Science
Building which are connected to the network and feature
wireless keyboard and mouse, VCR, projector, computers
with DVD drives, speaker systems, hearing
assistance equipment, receiver, cassette player,
external panel for secondary computer or video source,
and a remote keypad to simplify the equipment selection
process. Mediated classrooms in the White Building are
connected to the network and feature Smartcart wireless
connectivity, desktop computer, Elmo/visualizer, data
projector, VCR/DVD player, and speaker systems.
Classrooms must be reserved in advanced through the
Office of the Registrar, 810-762-3345.

Microsoft Sales Faculty, staff
and currently enrolled students may now purchase
Microsoft software products at greatly reduced prices!
Software is available for both PCs and Macintosh
computers. Please consult the

Sales page first, and then follow the instructions
to purchase these products through the ITS Office.

M-Information Stations These large, blue kiosks provide quick and easy
access to electronic mail, the library catalog, and
other public information resources. For maps of where
these stations are located, please consult the building

MOS & IC3 Certification ITS operates an authorized testing
center for Certiport certifications in Microsoft Office
Specialist (MOS) and Internet Core Computing (IC3)
certifications. Discounts are
available for UM-Flint students, faculty and staff.

Open Computer Labs Open computer
labs are located in 206 MSB, 223 French Hall, 3174 WSW,
and the Library. These labs offer computers from the
Windows, Macintosh, and Linux platforms that may be used
for coursework, Internet access, or remote-access

Progdata Progdata is a directory on the UM-Flint server where
faculty members are assigned a subdirectory in which
they may place files for students to read, print, or copy
onto their own disks. Examples of files commonly placed
in Progdata are class syllabi, class assignments, and
data files to be used by students when completing class
assignments. To obtain a Progdata subdirectory, complete
the online Access Request Form at

Quickdisc The QuickDisc CD-ROM is an efficient
alternative to downloading the latest versions of
various software applications for both Windows and
McIntosh. Programs include UMF Dialup Access Software,
anti-virus software, browsers, and multimedia software.

instructions for using the campus computing services and

Scanners Scanners are available for use in the
206 MSB, 459 French Hall (CROB), 3174 WSW, and 3107 WSW
(Faculty Technology Center) labs.

Server Software Installation Faculty may provide software to ITS for installation on
the student server. A Request for Software Installation
form must be submitted at least one week prior to the
date the software is needed. Download this form at

Software Training Software training is available free of
charge for UM-Flint faculty and staff through the ITS
workshop program. Current schedules and registration are

Student Information System (SIS) SIS provides students and faculty
secure Internet access to personal and public
information in the Banner system. Faculty services
available in SIS include schedule, rosters, waitlists,
grade submission and general student information. All
faculty members must submit final grades online via SIS.
An SIS Personal Identification Number (PIN) is required
in order to login to the system. Contact the Office of
the Registrar at 810-762-3344 to obtain a PIN. The SIS

Telephone & Voice Mail Services New telephone service, including voice
mail, as well as changes to existing telephone services
should be reported directly to
ITCom.
Campus-wide outages should be reported to ITS at (810)
762-3123. Individual technical difficulties
(static, etc.) should be reported directly to
ITCom.

UMCE Accounts UMCE accounts enable faculty and staff
to access the University of Michigan Computing
Environment on the Ann Arbor campus and to use national
and international dial-in services while traveling. For
UMCE account setup and current usage rates, contact ITS
at 810-762-3123.

Uniqname A uniqname identifies each user in the
U-M computing system and is used for computing services
supported centrally by ITCS in Ann Arbor. These services
include dial-up access, library catalogs, antivirus
software, and online training. A uniqname is assigned in
conjunction with a LAN account. Although one’s uniqname
and LAN ID will be the same, the passwords may be
different. Services that use the uniqname require the
UMICH (also called Ann Arbor or Kerberos) password.

Virus Protection The U-M Virus Busters group of ITCS
has selected Network Associates’ VirusScan for Windows
and Sophos (Macintosh) as the University’s virus
prevention software. This software is available free of
charge SOLELY to members of the U-M community for use on
their personal or work computers. The software can be
downloaded at

or is available on the ITS QuickDisc. Refer to

for further instructions.

Web pages ITS assists faculty
and staff with the design and publishing of
University-supported Web pages. University Web pages are
available for departments, programs, student groups, and
faculty/staff personal pages. Limited assistance is
available free of charge (fees may be imposed for
extensive Web design assistance).

Wireless Networking Wireless connectivity is available throughout most
campus buildings. Floor plans showing wireless coverage
areas can be viewed online at
http://ww2.umflint.edu/its/helpdesk/wireless.htm.
Faculty and staff may reserve a wireless computer from
the ITS unit, Mediated Classroom Services (MCS), or may
purchase a wireless card for use with their office or
personal computer. With wireless connectivity, almost
any classroom can become an instructional computer lab
using one of the mobile laptop carts. Each cart is
equipped with twenty-four wireless laptop computers.
