Student Services / Special Eventshealth care programming information, college preparatory information
The Genesee Area Skill Center's Health Platform students (approx. 500-700 students) will meet at the University of Michigan-Flint various times to meet with the School of Health Professions and Studies faculty and learn of the numerous allied health programs available. Presentations of the programs by faculty, hands-on demonstrations by Physical Therapy and Nursing, campus tours and meetings with Admissions, Financial Aid, the Career Development Center are all highlighted. Each year Senior student enrollment numbers into the University are assessed.
This program is designed for 9th-12th grade students, who are interested in becoming Desktop Computer Support Technicians. The students will shadow an ITS technician for a day or part of a day (limited to one or two students at a time per technician) onsite at UM-Flint.
This program is designed to assist 9th-12th grade students who are interested in becoming system administrators and to share with them our experience and knowledge about wired and wireless networks, Unix/Linux and Windows server system support, system and network security, datacenter design as well as public computer lab maintenance. The students will shadow an ITS system administrator (limited to one or two students at a time) onsite at UM-Flint.
This program is designed to assist students who are interested in careers in Web 2.0 technologies and to share with them our experience and knowledge about Web 2.0 and multimedia technologies. UM-Flint staff is available to demonstrate Web 2.0 technologies at district career day programs. Another option is for students to visit UM-Flint and shadow a web designer for either the morning or the afternoon (limited to one or two students at a time).
This program is designed to assist students who are interested in web development careers and to share with them our experience and knowledge about web design and programming technologies. UM-Flint staff is available to demonstrate web technologies at district career day programs. Another option is for students to visit UM-Flint and shadow a webmaster or web developer for either the morning or the afternoon (limited to one or two students at a time).
Curriculum Support, Professional Development / Continuing Education / Certificate Program
The purpose of the Center for Economic Education at UM-Flint is to provide curriculum support and development opportunities in the area of economics and personal finance for K-12 educators. The Center is affiliated with the Michigan Council on Economic Education and the National Council on Economic Education.

This event takes place annually each October. Area high school choirs are invited to campus for a full day of reherasals as part of the Festival Choir. The University of Michigan-Flint Chamber Singers is the host choir. Each invited choir also sings independently on the evening concert.

Each March, the Chamber Singers tour to area high schools to share thier music. Chamber Singers perform for the student body and conduct workshops with the school's choir.
The Choosing to Succeed Program is designed to increase the number and preparation of minority students in the Flint, Beecher and surrounding school districts who will graduate from high school, and to encourage and challenge them to pursue post-secondary education. CTS is divided into two components: grades 6-8 and grades 9-12. CTS provides a summer program and a comprehensive series of academic year workshops and enrichment activities.
This program places laptops into the hands of 4th through 8th grade students. Students are able to use the computers in class and at home. To date, Flint schools has placed approximately 3000 laptops into the hands of children. Collaboration with U of M - Flint has provided needed technical assistance to ready the laptops for deployment. Additional collaboration could be possible with the Genesee area Freenet to provide lowcost dialup access to the many children involved with this project. Not only does this make the internet a resource for children, but in many cases it would make it available to the entire family unit.
Professional Development / Continuing Education / Certificate Program
Two online school law courses are available covering Sexual Harrassment Issues and Child Abuse and Neglect. Each course is offered entirely online and SB-CEUs are awarded upon successful completion.
The Master of Arts in Education (MA) is offered through the School of Education and Human Services at UM-Flint. Prospective students have the option of applying for one of four specializations in our traditional MA in Education program (Early Childhood Education, Literacy K-12, Technology in Education, or Urban/Multicultural Education), for our accelerated teacher certification program (the "MAC"), for a certificate endorsement in Early Childhood Education (ZA), or for a focused planned program in special education.
The Master of Arts (MA) in Social Sciences degree is offered through the College of Arts and Sciences. The program consists of 30 semester graduate credit hours. Students specialize in one of three tracks: U.S. History and Politics, Global Studies, or Gender Studies.
Math Field Day is an annual daylong mathematics competition for high school students, held in late February or early March. Each participating high school enters a team of five students and one teacher/advisor. The students compete in a variety of individual and team contests which emphasize problem-solving skills.
The MLS in American Culture engages students in a critical, multidisciplinary examination of contemporary American culture. Students explore and critique issues important to American thought and culture, such as race, gender, equality, politics, religion, and popular culture. The MLS is chosen by many teachers and others in educational institutions who seek professional improvement.
The UM-Flint "WebPlus" Weekend/Online Program in Educational Administration is designed to provide a high-quality experience to full-time, working educators. A unique blend of face-to-face interaction and convenient online coursework provides the concepts and tools needed for successful K-12 administration. Monthly Saturday visits on the Flint campus are combined with coursework that you can do from the convenience of your own computer connected to the Internet. In addition, a clinical experience is organized in your current school setting. After completion of the two-year, 39-credit hour program, students are awarded a Master of Public Administration from the University of Michigan’s nationally-recognized Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies.
The Master of Science in Biology provides an advanced degree for students who have undergraduate degrees in biology or a related life science. The program is offered for working biologists in various professions including educators teaching science at the secondary level. The primary goals of the program are to offer broad, expanded training, as well as detailed, advanced training in biology and a complete research experience for post-baccalaureate students.
The MS in Computer and Information Systems program is designed primarily for working professionals wishing to improve their skills and knowledge in computer and information technology-related fields as well as those interested in pursuing a career in this field. These include teachers seeking a master’s degree to fulfill advance degree requirements.
The Reading and Math Rooms are after school tutoring programs for K-3rd graders. These programs are staffed by University of Michigan-Flint students that are trained as literacy and math tutors. Activities in the programs are all hands-on and interactive to increase students' interest and confidence in reading and math.
Professional Development / Continuing Education / Certificate Program
UM-Flint, in conjunction with several school districts, has developed two courses specifically for practicing administrators who need to complete re-certification requirements. These courses combine five Saturday meetings over the course of one term with the convenience of online learning. Each academic course carries 3 semester credit hours and participants may opt to take one or both of the courses. The courses begin every Winter semester (January).
The courses are team-taught by faculty in the Educational Administration concentration of the Master of Public Administration program at UM-Flint in conjunction with practicing school administrators. This unique opportunity will allow you to network with other practicing administrators, fulfill the certification requirements, and obtain academic credit.

The Technology Integrator Certificate Series offers two certificates. Technology Integrator I covers basic topic and software applications necessary to succeed in the management of a K12 classroom. The Technology Integrator II certificate teaches K12 teachers the basics of a number of software programs used today in the K12 environment such as Inspiration/Kidspiration, HyperStudio and also focuses on such topics and WebQuests.
All courses are online and offer SB-CEUs.
